1 ➥ page 4 A close relative of the human rickettsial pathogens causing such diseases as typhus and spotted fever has been found associated with papaya bunchy top disease, which greatly limits papaya production in the Caribbean area. It is the first rickettsia found to parasitize plants, and the discovery has important implication not only to respect to disease diagnosis and management, but also with regard to the theory that plant organelles have evolved from primitive bacteria.
